Karen Hardie
Karen Hardie is a qualified Art Therapist, registered with the Australian and New Zealand Art Therapists Association, (ANZATA). Karen grew up in Zimbabwe and South Africa, emigrated to Australia in 2000 and now practices from her studio in southern Sydney.
Karen has worked with adults in an acute psychiatric setting and also with children and young adolescents coping with a range of problems. She has a well developed understanding of people gained from her experience in the field of human resource development and working with people from diverse cultural and occupational backgrounds. Karen is also a qualified primary school teacher and it was through teaching that she discovered her desire to work therapeutically with children and families.
Karen has a Masters degree in Art Therapy from the University of Western Sydney. Karen's training is underpinned by psychodynamic theory such as attachment. Karen believes believes that art therapy provides an excellent framework into which techniques from other approaches such play therapy, cognitive based therapy and happiness psychology as may be woven in order to respond therapeutically to the unique needs of each client.
Karen is passionate about helping people others to find healing, hope and happiness in their lives through therapy. Her own experience as an artist has led to a sound understanding of the creative process and the many artistic modalities available. Art is an integral part of Karen's own life and she currently works as a glass artist but also enjoys playing with mixed media.
Karen is committed to using creative and expressive therapies to help her clients and currently works with children, adolescents and also women who may be struggling with issues related to post natal depression or traumatic experiences such as domestic violence. Her work with young twins has led to professional interest in twin related issues around identity and loss.
Karen has regular private supervision as well as her own therapy to assist her in providing the best possible care for her clients. She is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for clients so that they are enabled and empowered to find personal expression through expressive therapy.
